The History Boys- Book and Film Review

As part of my English A level I have to study the play The History Boys by Alan Bennett. I didn't have high hopes as I didn't enjoy any of the previous plays I've had to read for school in the past. But for a required read, it was really good.
The plot was enjoyable and had many shocking revelations that perhaps weren't quite as shocking as they could have been due to the hints throughout the play. It was a hilarious play; my favourite scene was the French scene in Act 1. Luckily, my teacher translated it for the class which made it easier to understand as I don't speak French. The boys pretend to be working in/visiting a brothel which was so funny. The play also produces some sympathy in unexpected places and shows what life was life at school during the 1980's.
I will have to read the play again for my course but for once, it won't be reluctantly.

I watched the film version of the play. I expected it to be better as it was performed rather than read. However, I was disappointed. It wasn't awful, far from it, but it was not as good as the text. There were extra scenes in the film that weren't in the play. I felt they were unnecessary and did nothing except make the film too long. The actors were amazing as they portrayed the characters really well. Overall it was a good movie but not the most accurate of adaptations.

I would recommend the play, whether you want to read it or watch it. It is definitely not a stereotypically boring required read.
